Madison River (YNP) 6-9-2010
The Madison is coming down and is right around 1,000 CFS right now. Streamer fishing has been good but there hasn’t been much in the way of dry fly fishing so far this season. If the river continues to drop, this should change in a hurry, as there have been decent numbers of PMDs hatching. Caddis should join the bug parade pretty quickly so long as the river gets into shape. Until things drop, look for soft water and fish it with stonefly nymphs or streamer patterns.
Firehole River 6-9-2010
The Firehole is back in good shape and while high has already had some good hatches of PMDs and Caddis. The water is tea colored but visiblity is quite good. The Firehole is the best fishery in the area right now and the only viable dry fly river. PMD Dun and emerger patterns are essential. CDC Caddis in 16’s and 18’s are a must have as well. When there aren’t hatches, swinging soft hackles and wet flies is very effective. Tan Sub-merger Caddis will fool a lot of trout.
Gibbon River 6-9-2010
The Gibbon has dropped and cleared and is in good shape. The river still has color but is much more fishable than it was a few days ago. There have been some Baetis hatching on the rainy days, but most of the fish rising to them are small. Better fish are eating nymphs and streamers fished in the Gibbon’s pools.
