Yellowstone Park Fishing Report 06-02-2010

Madison River 6-2-2010

The Madison River is pretty big in the Park right now.  All of rain has combined to blow 1,000 CFS through the river right now.  Though there are some PMDs and Baetis on the water, most of the fish that are being caught have large streamers in their mouths when they come to the net.  With more rain in the forecast, expect the good streamer bite to continue.  Olive, brown and black have been the best colors.

Firehole River 6-2-2010

The Firehole has been the best fishery in the Park.  PMD hatches have been the Firehole’s calling card thus far this season, though there are some Baetis and Caddis as well.  Timing the hatches has been a bit tough, as the bugs haven’t picked a set time for their emergence.  Some days have seen good activity before noon while other days have seen the bulk of the rising fish late in the afternoons.  When the PMD’s aren’t happening, fishing has been good with wet flies and soft hackles so don’t despair if there isn’t a good rise.

Gibbon River 6-2-2010

The Gibbon is pretty dirty at the moment, but fishing has been pretty good with streamers and large stonefly nymphs.  Look for calm pools where there are concentrations of fish and get good drifts. Dry fly fishing will wait until the water comes down a bit.
